Summer Learning Journey Week Three Day Two Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Three Day Two
Learning Intention: To earn full points for this activity you must type all five sentences and then fill in the blanks for each one. Post the completed sentences on your blog.
Unbee-lievable Facts about Bumblebees
  • The word ‘bumblebee’ is a compound word (bumble + bee). The word ‘bumble’ means to drone.
  • Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of 54 kilometres per hour (km/h).
  • Bumblebees are very strong! They carry up to 90 percent of their body weight in food with them to avoid starvation.
  • Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do up to  50 times as much work as a normal honeybee.
  • The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, including the  number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand because of people like us removing wildflowers from their habitat and the use of pesticides in the garden.

Activity 2 Week Three Day Two Learning Intention:On your blog, list all of the foods that you don't like to put in your special draining sink.

Some food that I don't like that I would put into my special draining sink are broccoli, collie, macaroni, eggs, pumpkin, corn and peas.

Activity 3 Week Three Day Two Learning Intention:Let’s imagine that we tested the air in your classroom and found 7 different kinds of mould. Eek! The cleaner says that it takes 5 days for each mould to be eradicated (removed). If the school had to remove each mould one at a time, how long would it take to remove all the mould from the classroom?

On your blog, tell us how you would solve this tricky maths problem. Be sure to also post your final answer in days or weeks.

To figure out this mathematics problem it really isn't that tricky. Since it takes 5 days for 1 mould to get removed you then keep going up in the five times tables like shown below.
Once you come to what the question was how much days or week would it take to remove all seven moulds. You can either do what I had done below or just do 7 moulds times 5 days which equals 35 days or 5 weeks.

5-1
10-2
15-3
20-4
25-5
30-6
35-7 This is the answer it will take 35 days (5 weeks) to remove seven moulds.

Summer Learning Journey Week Three Day One Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Three Day One
Learning Intention: On your blog, tell us what time of year you think is best for tourists for come and visit. Be sure to share at least three things that tourists could do while they were here in NZ.

The best time of year for tourism here in New Zealand is certainly in the Summer time.

In Summer a activity that tourists can do is the whale watching in Kaikoura. This is a great thing for them to do if they want to explore and find out more about whales and while they are going to watch the whales they can also enjoy the ocean.

The next activity that tourists can do in the Summer is to go kayaking. I would recommend go down to Kaiteriteri beach and hire their kayaks. Kaiteriteri beach is roughly 20 minutes away from Motueka and the beach is famous for its golden sand.

The last activity tourists can do in the Summer time is snorkelling. In the summertime snorkelling is the best time because when all the fish migrate and also corals and new reefs start to grow.

Activity 2 Week Three Day One Learning Intention: On your blog, list five different things that we can do to protect ourselves from the sun this summer!

1)Apply heaps of sunscreen to your skin where is will be exposed to the sun.

2) Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from UV radiation off the sun.

3) Sit under a tree or umbrella with shade to cool yourself down because if you get too hot you can get heat stroke.

4) Wear long sleeved t-shirts when in the sun to prevent your shoulders  from getting burn't.

5)Always wear a sunhat because just applying sunscreen isn't going to protect you face for the whole day.
Activity 3 Week Three Day One
Learning Intention: The hottest temperature on record in each place is: Dallol: 41oC; Dasht-e Loot: 71oC; Tirat Zvi: 54oC; Kabili: 55oC; Bandar-e Mahshahr: 51oC. Crazy ‘eh?!

For this activity, you are asked to use this information to create a graph. The graph should have a title along with the names of each city and their hottest recorded temperatures. You can draw the graph by hand or use a computer programme like Google Draw to create your graph. It’s completely up to you
This is a bar graph showing the temperature of each place.

Summer Learning Journey Week Two Day Five Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Two Day Five
Learning Intention: What do you think about this rule? Is it fair that people are charged up to $100 000 for over-fishing?
On your blog, tell us what you think about this rule and why you think it!
I think that this rule about being charged money for over fishing is definitely fair. I think being charged is fair for over-fishing because this can cause a huge impact on our sea life. Over-fishing has a huge impact on our sea life because if everyone that fishes fished over the limit on how much you were allowed to catch there won't be any thing left in our ocean. Also, there wouldn't just be nothing left in our ocean but different species of a certain fish would decrease into endangered and next will be extinction.
Activity 2 Week Two Day Five Learning Intention: Use Google to help you find two other polluted rivers in New Zealand other than the Tapawera River.

On your blog, tell us:
1) The names of the rivers. 2) The location of the rivers. 3) What is being done to clean up the rivers (if anything).
The first river I am going to talk to you about is the Manawatu River found in New Zealand. This river is being polluted by the dairy farms and towns close by with the sewage. The Manawatu River is found 12 km east of Palmerston North in the North Island of NZ. This river is being helped by two groups joining and trying to contribute this river and help people get involved to help.
The second river I am going to write about is my local Grey River. This river is highly polluted by sewage from Greymouth and flooding issues. The Grey River is found flowing between the Cobden and Blaketown tip of Greymouth in the South Island of NZ. Whats being done to help the Grey River is by us having this water system that can measure how much rain fall happens each day and from this they can be aware of flooding in the river and to stop this pollution.
Activity 3 Week Two Day Five Learning Intention: On your blog, list three different ideas or strategies for raising funds to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. What could you do to fund raise here in New Zealand?

1)The first idea that came to my mind to help fund raise for the great barrier reef is to walk around town or ask stores is they would like to put how much money they want into a bucket like a piggy bank but I will say what its for and why they could help.

2) Since I am still in primary school I could help the Great Barrier Reef by doing a mufti day at my school and each child who wears clothes other than their school uniform have to give $2 to the office to be wearing mufti.

3) Lastly I can help fund raise for the Great Barrier Reef is by selling $2 raffle tickets on a stool in my local supermarket. These people that come and buy my tickets also write their phone number in a square with a labelled number. Once people put their phone number in I can do a random number picker and it would pick a random number and what ever number that won and had gotten picked gets prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Summer Learning Journey Week Two/Day Four Activity 2

Activity 1 Week Two Day Four
Learning Intention: On your blog tell us which of the three options you would take to
explore Milford Sound. Be sure to tell us why you have chosen this option.
The way I would like to explore  the Milford Sound is in a chopper because the view would be
magnificent to see up high and because I have never been in a helicopter before.

Activity 2 Week Two Day Four

On your blog, give us a list of three to five options for the name of this geothermal pool.
Put a star (*) beside the name that you like the most.
My names for this lime coloured pool are...

-Limey lake falls
- Slime infested lake
- Slime cliff falls,
- Shrieks snot pool (*)

- Lime thick shake

Activity 3 Week Two Day Four Learning Intention: On your blog, write a short story about what you think is happening in the picture. Be sure to tell us where you think the people are and what you think they were doing at the time that they stopped to pose for the selfie. To earn full points, the story must be 8 – 10 sentences long.

The photo I choose to write a story about is the second.

I walk up these never lasting steps to the peak of a sight seeing view. I suddenly tilted my round head towards the warm and soft clouds hovering above me and seen a huge person . I seen other people going up one by one into this huge Rio statue, I lined up to climb it. When It was my turn I placed one foot on the strong and unpredictable ladder. Finally I got to the top. "Wow" was all I could say. I pulled my phone out and snap! I'd taken a selfie. I could feel the smooth and fresh breeze  pushing against my gentle body.

Summer Learning Journey Week Two Day Three, Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Two Day Three
Learning Intention: On your blog, tell us whether you are a night owl or an early riser. Then, tell us about the rest of your family. Are they the same as you? .

Kia Ora , ko Jack toku ingoa ( Hi my name is Jack). I am the youngest boy sibling out of four. I am a night owl as well as my older brother Jayden and my dad Graeme. We are night owls because mostly every night us three are up unitl like 1:30 to 2:00 each night to morning in the garage helping my dad. If you read my posts you are probably sick of me writing that I help my dad fix motorbikes and car a lot but it is true that's what us boys do.

One thing, although my dad is a night owl he is also a early riser because he wakes often every morning around 5:30am and goes to his work.

My older sister Jennae is a night owl as well. Jennae is a night owl because she is always up until 11:00pm doing her school work like this the Summer Learning Journey(by the way, she is so obsessed with), and she likes to read at night as well. Jennae can wake up some mornings early but mostly around 10:30am so she is still a night owl.

6
My second older sister Kayla and my mother (Glenda) are both early risers. These two are both early risers because my sister and mother go to the same work place and wake up every morning around 7:00am and leave around 9:15am to go to work.

So as you can tell we are all different in our own ways but these can somethings change as well to the opposite.

Activity 2 Week Two Day Three Learning Intention:For this activity, please choose a favourite food and find a recipe for it.

On your blog, share a list of the ingredients that you need to make this food. You must type out the list of ingredients yourself (and not simply copy and paste it from a website) to earn full points.

Ingredients:

-6 tablespoons of butter
-2lbs of chicken breasts, cut into chunks
-1 yellow onion, diced
-3 garlic cloves, minced
-1 tablespoon of garam masala
-1 tablespoon of fresh grated ginger
-1 tablespoon of chili powder
-1 teaspoon of ground cumin
-1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper
-1 1/2 cups of tomato sauce
- 2 cups of cream
-Salt and pepper
-lime and cilantro
-naan and rice for serving
Recipe
1) To start off your butter chicken recipe you need to add your two tablespoons of butter into a large
skillet pan over medium-high heat and let it melt. Then put your chicken into a pan and then brown each side of your chicken. Don't do altogether work in batches if you like and then set a side.
2) Next melt another two tablespoons of butter and in a pan at medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook until it begins to soften(2-3 minutes). Then add the garlic, garam masala, ginger, chili powder, cumin and your cayenne pepper. Then stir to combine and then cook around 40-50 second and then add your tomato sauce.
3) Thirdly bring the mixture to a simmer and let is cook for five minutes before adding your cream. next bring the mixture back to a simmer again, add the browned chicken and let simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Keep the heat low at this stage not a boil.
4) Stir the remaining two tablespoons of butter and then sprinkle some salt and pepper for the taste.
5) Serve butter chicken with the lime and cilantro along with the rice and naan.

Activity 3 Week Two Day Three
Learning Intention: Let’s imagine that the average adult can lift 25 kg and the average child can lift 15 kg. How many adults and children will it take to move the giant squid into its new room at Te Papa? [Note: There is more than one right answer to this question.]
On your blog, tell us how you will solve this maths problem. You can write your answer in words, use a Sketchpad image or post a video explaining how you would figure it out. Be sure to give us your final answer. .

To figure out how much adults you will need to lift the 500 kg squid you can figure it out by going 500 divided by 25 and get the answer 20 or you can go 20x 25 equals 500. So you will need 20 adults to lift a 500 kg squid. Next to figure out how much children you need to lift a 500kg squid you can go 15 multiply what would be 500 which equals 33.3333333 or you can go 500 divided by 15 which equals 33.3333333 as well.

Summer Learning Journey Week Two Day Two, Activity 1,2 and 3

Activity 1 Week Two Day Two, Weaving
Learning Intention: On your blog, tell us whether or not you would like to try flax weaving. Does it interest you? Why or why not?

I would want to try flax weaving because it would be a new skill I have learnt and looks challenging but I like challenges. I am not really interested in flax weaving because I have other interests like helping my dad in the shed fix things such as cars and motorbikes.

Activity 2 Week Two Day Two, Strong Person Learning Intention: For this activity you are asked to think of someone who is very tough and strong. They can be someone who you know personally or they can be a character that you have read about in a book, seen in a movie, or on a television show. On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong and tough? This person I think that is so strong and tough is my dad. I think my dad is so strong because all his life he has been lifting heavy things like car engines, car transmissions, motorbikes and pushing cars etc. I think my dad is so tough because when my dad gets cut open by something at his work, he doesn't even notice he had hurt himself until I told him for an example there was a deep cut on his finger.

Activity 3 Week Two Day Two, Stranger Than Fiction

Learning Intention: On your blog, list three similarities and three differences between the two plants that you chose. To earn five extra bonus points, post a picture of both plants on your blog.

The two plants I chose are the Rafflesia Arnoldii and the Corpse Flower.

Similarities

1) The corpse flower and the rafflesia arnoldii are both a type of flower.

2) Both of these flower look similar by the both being the same shape and colour.

3) The corpse flower produces the smell of a decomposing animal and the rafflesia arnoldii flower produces not a very nice irritating smell. So they both produce smells that are horrible.

Differences

1) A difference between the two flowers is that the corpse flower grows to stand at 8.2 feet tall and the rafflesia Arnoldii flower grows to a size of three feet.

2) A second difference between the two flowers is that the Corpse flower only blooms every 40 years and the rafflesia arnoldii  flower blooms every nine months and lasts for a week.

3) A third difference between the two flowers is that the rafflesia arnoldii  flower grows in the forest and the corpse flower grows in a wet and humid rain forest.
