Term 2 Weeks 9-10

Purpose of these reading activities is to: increase our
knowledge of space exploration and understand how
our knowledge and ideas about space have changed over
time (science). We are also learning to read non-fiction texts
and use our writing skills to share our understanding of this topic
and our ideas (literacy). Throughout this task we will need to use
the skills of ‘Thinking’ and using ‘Language, Symbols and Text.’

Learning Intentions
I am learning to skim and scan text to identify the main ideas.
I am learning to locate the key sentences and questions in texts.
I am learning to use sub-headings to guide me to the main ideas in text.
I am learning to summarise the main ideas in the texts I read.
(from the Karoro Programme of work for Reading)

I am learning to write well structured paragraphs.

Success Criteria
I will be successful when I can show….
-I have have scanned text to find key ideas.
-I have summarised the main ideas from the reading.
-I have put my answers in chronological order.
-I have written two well structured paragraphs explaining how some of our ideas
about space have changed over time (introductory sentence, supporting detail, concluding sentence).

Read the three paper based reading activities given to you about Stephen Hawking,
Galileo Galilei and The Telescope. You will be put with a buddy to do this work. We will mark and
discuss our answers together as a class.

To add to our learning we will watch/ read and discuss these following videos or articles. Image result for big bang theory space

After we have completed these reading activities and viewing and discussing the above
materials your task is to write at least two well structured paragraphs explaining how our ideas
about space have changed over time.

Write your paragraphs here.

How are ideas have changed about space

Our ideas about black holes have changed over time.Stephen Hawking
was a famous scientist that had lots of ideas about black holes. Stephen
Hawking changed our ideas about black holes. We use too think that nothing
come out of black holes but Stephen Hawking discovered that radiation
#comes out of black holes. Stephen Hawking thinks that the universe was
made from a dense black hole then it exploded and now everything is
expanding. Scientists have now proven that everything is  moving away
from us this means that Stephen Hawking might be correct.
These are how our ideas about black holes have changed over time.

Our ideas about our solar system that have changed over time.
Galileo Galilei changed our ideas about our solar system.
The Roman church thought that  the sun orbited the Earth and that
everything else orbited us and that we were the center of the universe.
Galileo Galilei made a telescope and found out that we orbited the sun and everything else in our solar system orbited the sun too. Then Galileo got put
under house arrest for auguring with the church. We now know that he was
right and with the technology that we have now that we can prove that he was
right. These are how our ideas have changed about our Solar System over
time.

Focus

We are looking at using non-fiction text to increase our knowledge in our science topic; SPACE.
Your aim is to read and understand the timeline reading and use this knowledge to complete the
reading activity below.

First, Read the timeline cards. Click here for the space timeline pdf

Second, We will discuss what you have read. This will be a good time to ask questions about
anything you are unsure of.

Third, do your reading tasks.

Fourth, complete your reading activity. Remember to proofread, check spelling and punctuation.
Then do a self assessment and a peer assessment. Check it with a teacher.

Reading Activity

View and read the space timeline on the classroom walls.
Think about how how our theories/ideas and understandings
about the universe and Earth’s place in it has changed over time.

Answer the following questions.
Your answers need to be full sentences.
After you have answered all the questions please put them in
chronological order (time order, oldest first)

1)What are two things that Galileo discovered? 1610 He discovered jupiter's
moons and the different phases of venus.

2)Who discovered the first asteroid? The first asteroid, Ceres, was discovered
by Giuseppe Piazzi. 1801

3)What was Sputnik 1? It was the first satellite to be launched to space. 1957

4)In what year was NASA founded? And what does NASA mean? In 1958
NASA  was found. NASA means (National Aeronautic sand Space
Administration)was founded.

5)Who was the first woman in space? And where was she from?1963
Valentina Tereshkova  was the first woman in space and she was from russia.

6)Where did Mariner 4 fly past? Mariner 4 flew past mars in 1965.

7) In what year did Apollo 11 land on the moon? The Apollo 11 landed on
the moon in 1969.

8)What country launched Voyager probes 1 and 2 into deep space? 1977
America launches Voyager probes 1 and 2 into deep space. They reached
Jupiter in 1979 and Saturn in 1980.

9)What happened that led to all space shuttles being grounded for 3 years?
Space shuttle Challenger exploded after launch, killing the seven astronauts
on board. This led to all shuttles being grounded for 3 years.1986

10)When was the international space station completed? Construction began on the International Space Station. The
final part was finished in 2010. 1986

11)How long did it take for the Cassini probe to arrive at Saturn? It took them
nearly 7 years to land on saturn. 2004.

12)What was interesting about New Horizons information about Pluto? NASA’s
New Horizons spacecraft arrived at Pluto after travelling for nine years and a
total distance of 4.6 billion miles. Data sent to the Earth showed that Pluto is
fifty miles larger than was first thought. 2015

YOUR OPINION
After reading this information...

  1. Who do you think made the biggest contribution to our understanding
  2. of space? Why? (summarising key ideas) Galileo Galilei because he
  3. made the first telescope and discovered Jupiter's moons. He also
  4. discovered lunar craters and the different phases of Venus.

    2) What do you think was the most important machine or
invention in helping us investigate space? Why? (summarising key ideas)
Telescopes because without telescopes we would`t be able to see any other
planets.

    3) What would you like to investigate about space? Why?
I would like to learn more about black holes and how they turn you
into spaghettification (which where it breaks your body up back into atoms)
because I dont really no much about black holes.

Focus

We are continuing to look at descriptive writing. This week you are writing a descriptive piece of writing
to promote your imaginary planet. You aim is to convince people to move to your planet. You want your
writing to allow the reader to be able to imagine what it is like on your planet.

First, we will look at an excerpt of a video describing the moon from the Avatar movie.
Click here to get to video= Pandora.

Second, we will discuss together what you will need in your work to make it successful and look at how
to plan our work. Then you will plan your work and check with a teacher before you start writing.

Third, do your piece of writing.

Fourth, complete you piece of writing. Remember to proof-read (check spelling and punctuation) and
edit (does it make sense? do you need to change any sentences?) yourself and with a buddy and fill in
your self and peer-assessment. Check it with a teacher.

Plutanium

Plutanium is an Earth like planet that is three times the  size of Jupiter and
orbits in the same line as Plutorious. It takes one Ao (Earth) year for it to
orbit the sun the sun is very hot on plutanium.

Plutanium is the identical twin of Plutorious they have their own solar system
its called Plutoranious.
Plutanium is a tropical planet that has teal coloured water which is just as
warm as a bath.

Plutanium has dinosaurs like Earth use to have. The people that live on the
planet are mutants. They are friendly and not scary. The mutants breathe
oxygen like us humans and they are very strong like hulk.

The planet Plutanium is made out of rock and precious metals. It is found
in the middle of the Milky way galaxy. Plutanium has 35 Marama (moons)
and if you look up at night you will see all 35 moons that cover the sky.

The only way to get to Plutanium is in a gold and silver rocket ship called
Bullet 2, 4, 6.
