Cannibal Gorge Recount

 Cannibal Gorge Recount

On tuesday the 8th of december the year 8 boys arrived at school by 8:30am to go on the Cannibal Gorge overnight tramp.

After Ms Kemp had checked to make sure we had the right equipment we weighed our bags. Cailan's pack was the lightest at 6.05 kg and my pack was the second lightest at 6.2kg. We got sorted into our car groups and then left, the people in my car were Cailan, Xavier and Rhys. We stopped at refton to buy our hut tickets. After we brought our hut ticket we got to have a look in the eye site because it was a museum too. There was a mine in the eye site and it was pretty cool then the year 8 boys played tag in the museum and on the footpath. When we arrived at the start of the track I didn't know what to expect. We got out of the cars, adjusted our packs then we had a quick talk and then we set off.

Cailan, Xavier and I stayed together when we walked into the hut. Walking into the hut I thought it was pretty difficult because there were lots of up hills and some of them were quite steep. The part of the track that I didn't like the most was where there was a look out and the track went down hill the track was really small width ways and it was really loose and it was on the side of a cliff. My favourite part of the hike was the second swing bridge going in because you could jump on it and when you were walking it felt like you were walking on the moon with very low gravity. When we came out of the bush and saw the hut some of the students got really excited and then Ms Kemp said dump your packs and have a twenty minute break then grab your rain jacket and water bottle and let's walk to the Ada Flat Hut. The walk to the Ada Flat Hut took about 1 hour 20 minutes. My favourite part of this walk was the bridge because it  had a strange name. As we arrived at the Ada Flat Hut I wrote in the hut book that we had gone there and there was a lady and a man there too. I also filled up Ms Kemp’s, Alex’s and my water bottle up from under a bridge. The view of the mountains looks really nice from the track.

For dinner Cailan, Xavier and I cooked some sausages and bacon after dinner we shot a slingshot at a target on a tree and I was like an inch too high and no one hit the target. Then we went inside and played a game called drop swap pickup. It was pretty fun. Then when it was dark people were telling creepy stories then Ms Kemp told one about possum gut gorge and this golden arm one she jumped scared me on the golden arm story and I got a little scared when she scared me. As we were walking back to the hut a possum chased Xavier and Charlie when we went to sleep we looked out the window and there were two possums on the picnic table. It was pretty scary because Ms Kemp had just told me that some possums ate a human. For breakfast my group cooked pancakes. They didn't really turn out that great because Xaviers dad brought a pan with ribs in it. Before we left Alex went to go fill his and my water bottle up in the river but Alex accidentally let go of his water bottle and it floated down the river. We also tied and cleaned the hut before we left.

When we left the hut it was raining I stuck towards the back with Ms Kemp and Alex because Alex used a pole and when we went through the creeks and avalanche zones Alex passed the pole back to me. I found that on the way back it was quicker because we had more down hills than up hills. I filled up Alex’s and my water bottle up from the creek on the way back and I put his water bottle in his bag while he put my water bottle in my bag. When we got back to the start we took a class photo in front of the sign. We stopped at Arahua and Xavier’s brought everyone in his car group an ice cream. We got back to karoro school at like 2:30pm.

I really enjoyed this tramp because the views were amazing.

WhatNow Recount

 WhatNow Recount

Last Sunday room 8 and 7 got invited to WhatNow at Shantytown and we had to be there at 7am, but the people didn't come until 7:10 to unlock the gate. When we were allowed inside the gate it took another ten minutes for the whatNow people to get us ready and tell us what to do.

The first live video was us getting off the train in Shantytown. We did a practice run which everyone thought was real and then did the real one on live tv 15 minutes after we had done the practice run.  The second clip was, say it don't spray it, we filmed it in front of the old fire station in Shantytown.

They picked five people to say this tongue twister if they got the tongue twister wrong they would get squirted with foam and if they got it correct they wouldn't spray them with foam, the tongue twister was, “Sheila seldom sells shelled shrimps in Shantytown”.

Next we lined up to go to the movie theater, we walked into the movie theater and everyone walked into this massive dark room which was the movie theater which we were not supposed to go in. Then it cut to a clip that Erin had filmed the day before.

The next activity/clip was a clip of Room 7 and 8  gold panning while the WhatNow person spoke to the camera and the person that works at Shantytown taught  Erin the WhatNow person how to gold pan. I found gold and took it to her and I got on television.

We then did our second to last clip by playing, ‘Target The Teacher’.  Before we started the clip the people that screamed the loudest were allowed to play. Jack got chosen but I personally think Wyatt broke the sound barrier and should have gotten chosen too.

When we went live Ms Newton had to answer questions and if she answered right everyone got sprayed in foam but if she answered wrong (which she did) the few that were chosen were able to hit the target with a ball.  When they did gunge poured onto Ms Newton.

The final activity was multi gunge at the post office, Erin got the foam gun and shot us all with it except Xavier and Alex. They went right to the back and dodged the foam because they didn't want to get changed. Erin said, “ I haven't left enough mess behind so let’s make some mess”. Erin gave us all a gunge bottle each at the end.In conclusion it was a fun morning and we got to watch ourselves on television when we got home.

Haiku

I did a rainbow trout for a haiku.

Lake Daniells Tramp

 Lake Daniells Tramp

Lake Daniell is a tramp in the Southern Alps just past Springs Junction. The tramp is in the Lewis Pass. Before we left Ms Kemp was explaining the rules and what we would do if someone got hypothermia. The main rule was to leave no trace. What she meant was to leave the track how it was before we arrived. She also told the class not to wonder off the track because the beech forest all looks the same and it is very easy to get lost. After she explained the rules she got people into their car groups to head off.

Our car group had Jack, Xavier, Charlie, Ethan, and Ms Kemp. At the start of the car ride Charlie started I SPY. As the game went on we added maori words to it. Ms Kemp made a very hard one for Jack, Xavier and Ethan but Charlie got it really easily. Ethan made a hard one to but in english. It was a speaker. The clues he gave were… They are in cars, in houses, and on technology devices. When we got to Reefton they were hounding Ethan to give them the answer. Once we left Reefton they were still trying to get the answer but they couldn't so  they had given up. After the I Spy game Charlie asked to play music and Ms Kemp said yes. Charlie was vibing to the music and he had an imaginary guitar in his hand playing it.

Before we started the tramp Ms Kemp gave us each a number for the number off. A number off is a quick and easy way to make sure everyone was there.

The Lake Daniell walk was pretty boring, Although it got fun as we went on. When we set off we were moving at a great speed. As we went through the track people got a bit crazy by throwing moss at each other. Once we got to the first stop we had a check up. Once we carried on there was a whole pile of moss sitting on an edge of a drop that people had picked up. At stop two Ms Kemp changed who was in the front so we could keep a good speed. We got a drink and if we wanted to we could get a little snack to eat while walking. The third stop was one of the challenging stops. It was the part where most of the hills were and where the parents had to tell some of the kids to not stop walking to keep on going.

Once we got to the fourth stop we had another drink of water. When we left to keep on going we then reached a flat surface to walk along. About 30 minutes later we got to the Kōhanga Atawhai-Manson-Nicholls Hut. We had a stop and had some lunch. People were sitting on the deck next to the hut. Jack, Xavier, Ethan, and Ms Kemp were sitting at a picnic table. Once we had finished lunch Jack had brought his fishing rod so he went to go try and catch fish. The first cast was ok, it went out quite far out then the second cast got snagged, on something below the surface. But after many tries he got it unstuck but the line was tangled up so he cut the line and got Ms Kemp to retie the swivel back onto the line. The last cast was a failure the lure got snagged on the same thing that was under the surface then he was trying to get the lure unstuck but the line snapped and he didn't have any more swivels so he packed the fishing rod up and then the class got a picture at the hut then set back off to got to the cars.

Once finished at the hut we headed back onto the track. On the way back it was pretty quick but the classmates who were throwing moss at each other got a growling. So they had to be at the back with Ms Kemp and a parent in front of that line. When we finally got to the end some people went on a rope swing around the side of the track. When the others at the back came out we gave out a thank you to all the parents that helped with transport and on the walk. On the way back to school Ms Kemp decided to drop Xavier and Charlie at home. When we finally got to school Ethan and Jack grabbed their bags and headed off home.

Ski Trip

Health and Physical Education Level 4

WALT access and use information to make and action safe choices in a range of contexts.

WALT demonstrates willingness to accept challenges, learn new skills, and extend abilities in movement-related activities.

WALT specify individual responsibilities and to take collective action for the care and safety of others in the school and in the wider community.

Context: Porter Heights Ski Day 2020

Success Criteria:

  • I will discuss and demonstrate my understanding of the Skier’s Code of Conduct in pre-ski discussion and through my actions on the ski field… making responsible and appropriate choices throughout Ski Day. Yes

  • I will undertake ski/snowboard lessons suitable for my skill level, seeking to improve my technique and control.  Yes

  •  I will be correctly equipped for my participation in Ski Day. Yes

  • I will create a response to the ski trip to share my new learning. Yes

Code Of Conduct

Stay In Control: Be able to turn and stop correctly.

Know Your Limits: Know how good you are and where you should be.

Follow The Signs: Read the signs and follow them .

Look ahead: Make sure you give the person below you the right of way.

Secure Your Gear: Put your gear in the right place when finished.

Stop On The Side: Stop on the side to prevent accidents.

Right Gear: Bring: the correct/suitable gear.

Know Load Unload: Know how to get on and off the Chairlift, Poma and Magic carpet.

We focused on staying in control and knowing our limits the most because if we had not done that people might have got seriously injured.

Intermediate Lesson

On the intermediate ski lesson we learnt how to safely go down the Intermediate Slope and be more confident to eventually go up the ChairLift.

What we found easy was turning down the slope with the wedge because we knew a little about turning.

What we found hard about our lesson was when she told us to lift one of our legs up while we skied to the other side of the slope, causing us to put a lot more pressure on our other leg.

In our lesson we learnt  a lot more about skiing so next time Xavier goes he can go up the chair lift because Jack went down it twice like a Boss, while Xavier had to wait in the car because of an injury.

Xavier and Jack.

Gear list.Equipment List.

We had to bring all this stuff to be properly equipped otherwise we wouldn't be able to go.Warm layers of clothing (polypro/thermals), Waterproof jacket, Waterproof trousers, Woollen or polypro hat, Warm, waterproof gloves or mittens, Warm socks, Sunglasses or ski goggles –compulsory!!!,Sunscreen, Factor 15+, An extra set (dry) of clothing for

the journey home, Lots of water to drink, Lunch (Students will not be permitted to purchase food/drink from the restaurant and students will not require any extra money,

We ask that parents respect this school request as this is a school outing.),Lots of snacks to eat, Medication YOU might require.

The most interesting thing that happened to Xavier is when he twisted his leg and had to ride down on a toboggan by a really skilled skier who was the medic. The most surprising thing that happened to Jack was that he got really good at skiing so he could go down the chairlift.

Beach Cook Out

On Wednesday the 1st of July Room8 went down to karoro beach by Watson creek.
The people in my group were Cailan, Flynn, James and Me, our group made nachos.
The fire we built was a log cabin to make the fire. We dug a fire pit out and put rocks around the edge.
Then we got two pieces of kindling and kept stacking them parallel to each other.

To start the fire we found some tinder which was some dead grass and put the tinder in the middle
and stacked some fire wood on top. Once we lit the fire we waited for the fire to burn down until there
was just embers left, we put the frying pan on the embers then we put the mince on the pan we steered
the mince to make sure it would not burn. When the mince was cooked we placed a bit of mince on
each person's plate then we got the nacho chips and put sweet and sour sauce on the chips then
some grated cheese then the mince on top.

To clean up we got some sand and water and put it on the fire until there was no steam or smoke.
The food was great and we did all this work for the William Pike Challenge.
