The Back In Time Elevator

One day I was walking through town on the cracked and broken footpath.
I was going to have a look at the shopping mall. I had to go into the mall to
get in the elevator. The elevator was made out of glass so you could see out
of it. I was going up to the 23third story. Suddenly the elevator starts shaking
I yell out “HELP!” I crashed down onto my face it felt I got hit in the head with
a basketball.

I am somehow on a grass hill so I look up and say to my self that elevator must
have sent me back 66 million years ago look over there is a dozen of
brachiosaurus dinosaur. But over there look at those jagged rocks they look
they could be a castle I kept looking around and I see a mist. Up above the
mist, there are pterosaurs they're massive. You can hear the brachiosaurus
siping on the water. I heard the trees crashing down its a TREX run I run and
then I trip over and get knocked out when I wake up I am in the elevator and
that’s the story of the back in time elevator The End.

Turning Old into New

Literacy

Science/Social Science learning goals Image result for plastic pollution
We are learning to understand about the environments around us and the negative of positive
impact our actions can have on these environments.

Success criteria;

  • identify and explain some of the issues facing our environment today
  • identify some of the negative impacts humans are having on the environment
  • identify some positive actions people are taking both here and around the world to try
  • and help look after our environment.
  • identify some positive actions we can take at school and in our own lives to help our
  • environment.
  • learn about our local bush track and creek and identify some ways in which we can
  • help to look after (kaitiakitanga) these areas.

Reading Learning Goals

-I am learning to use sub-headings to guide me to the main ideas in text.
-I am learning to use illustrations, text boxes, charts and graphs to help me make inferences so
I get more information from the text.
-I am learning to use more than one text, in print or electronic formats, to gather and check the
accuracy of information.
-I am learning to read a wide range of texts (e.g. encyclopaedias, websites, newspapers)  to
gather and check information on a topic.
-I am learning to explain why the author has written a text.
-I am learning to read and understand text that contains academic and topic-specific vocabulary.

Read the text, ‘Turning Old Into New’ and then complete the following activities.

  1. Why is recycling a good idea?
Recycling is a good idea because it reduces palotion and  can be made into new things.
  1. How many tons of rubbish do New Zealanders send to landfills every year? NZ sends
  2. away 2.5 million tons of rubbish to different countries. Actually this is the amount we put
  3. in our own landfills in NZ, we send away more in recycling.

  1. When rubbish breaks down what gas does it produce?  What environmental problem
  2. does this contribute to?

When rubbish breaks down it releases toxic gases including co2 and       methane.
The gases releases co2 into the atmosphere and contributes to global                          warming

  1. Complete this sentence:  Everything we use is made from  Earth's Natural
  2. Resources

  1. Explain where these resources come from;

Wood: Wood comes from trees or plants. Some wood from pine trees, are considered
renewable because they can grow back.

Metal: Metal comes from rocks that are mined from the ground. It`s  nonrenewable
because there is a limited amount available on Earth.

Plastic: Plastic is a little more complicated. There are many different kinds of plastic,
but most of them are all made from the same natural resource-oil.

6) How does oil form? Oil forms from the remains of plants and animals that lived millions of
years ago. The plants and animals were covered by mud and sand. Over millions of years,
mud and sand built up into layers and turned into rock. The heat and and pressure from the
rock turned the plant and animals matter into oil and gas.

7)Fortunately, glass can be recycled endlessly without any loss in purity or quality. ... It can also
be turned into countertops, flooring, tile landscaping stones and bricks. In Manitoba, most
recycled glass is crushed and used as aggregate for road bases and water and sewer
installations.

8) What are some of the things cardboard can be recycled into?Recycled cardboard is a high
quality material that can be used as packaging materials and boxes. Cardboard can be recycled
many times without losing its strength. Corrugated cardboard containers that get used for
shipping have a high percentage of post consumer recycled content.

9) What can plastic with the number 1 be recycled into? Number 1 plastic can be recycled into
pillows, sleeping bag fillings, carpet and clothing.

10)  Attach a google drawing here that explains how number 1 plastics can be turned into
clothing.

11) What are microfibres and what is the problem with them?Microfibers  are tiny fibers
from our clothes there problem is that they kill our under waterlife.

12) What is Earth Overshoot day? Earths overshoot day is a concept created by global
Footprint Network. It marks the date each year when people have used all the resources
the planet can regenerate in that year. To calculate the date, the global Footprint Network
follows a simple formula.

Glossary - Write what these words mean

Atoms:- The smallest particle of a substance that can exist by itself or be combined with other
atoms to form a molecule.

Carded:(relating to fibres) aligned in the same direction.

Global Warming:- a gradual increase in Earth's average temperature due to increase levels
of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Malt:-barley or other grain that has been used for brewing beer.

Natural resources: Materials found in nature that can be used by people, such as air, water,
plants, animals and rocks.

Synthetic:-something that is made by people and is the result of combining different chemicals.

In class we will be working on projects looking at issues around rubbish and what we can do to
help reduce this problem.

Play Summary - Term 3 Weeks 1-2

For the next two weeks you are working in groups to practise
and perform a play. This is using our oral language and reading
skills in literacy. Our key competency focus is participating and
contributing.

For writing your task is to summarise the main events
in your play in three paragraphs. You must plan your writing
first but it is up to you how you do your planning.  You must also
write a fourth paragraph about your experience of practising and
performing your play.

Yr 6

I am learning to plan my writing to suit the purpose of my writing.
I am learning to organise my ideas into paragraphs where the ideas are
clearly related and where there are links within and between paragraphs.
I am learning to use basic punctuation accurately in my writing.
I am learning to use complex punctuation to enhance my writing e.g. colons : and semi-colons
; , and parentheses ().

Success Criteria
I will be successful when I can/have
-summarised the play in three paragraphs
-made links across my paragraphs

Once you have finished your writing highlight these success criteria green if you
have met them and can show them in your work. Highlight green in your work where you
have met these success criteria.

Māui And The Giant Ika

In the story there are Maui and his brothers and Maui is a demi god.
In the first part of the story Maui’s brothers where going fishing but Maui is not
allowed to go fishing because  his brothers won’t let him. Maui had a plan to
hide in the Waka for the whole night so that he could go fishing with his
brothers.

In the second part of the story Maui scares his brothers when they are
out at sea fishing because he jumps out of his hiding spot and Maui says
to his brothers,“Let's keep going out” but his brothers don't want to but
Maui paddles out to where he thinks there's fish. Maui's brothers say,“We are
not giving you any bait”.

At the end of the story Maui uses his grandmother's jawbone as a hook
and puts it on his nose and uses blood from his nose for bait. Maui throws
the jawbone out  and gets a mighty bite and he pulls it up and Maui says
this is a gift from our grandmother. He pulls up a fish that is the size of a land.
Maui goes to travel to the head of the fish to get his jaw bone and he ask
his brothers not to touch the fish .The brothers start too chop it up because
they are jealous and  this fish became the North Island. Because Maui's
brothers chopped it up that’s why there are hills there.

When our group did our play I felt it was going to go really well. One of the
things we did well was looking to the audience and not turning our backs
to the audience. We enjoyed making the props and performing. As a team
we helped each other if we got stuck on a word or something. We participated
in making the masks and performing our play. We contributed by bringing the
props from our homes. One thing I would improve on next time is to memorize
my lines.
